At a time like this, when we’re all facing the global threat of a coronavirus pandemic, it can be hard to find the good in all the bad going on around us. But if you look hard enough, you will find one of the most enduring phenomenons during a crisis — the human spirit of giving.
With every disaster and crisis, there’s those people and organizations that mobilize to lend a hand in easing the pain of those affected by a crisis. Not surprisingly, there’s quite a few stories coming out of Envoy that embody goodwill and stewardship.
That’s why we’re sharing “Silver Linings”, a series dedicated to stories of hope and perseverance during these hard times. Let’s start by catching up with Laneshia Fentress, Leadership Training Specialist, who is in the process of joining a buddy-system program with Gateway Church in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
“We’re all human.”
How did you become involved in your church’s buddy-system program?
I currently serve on the worship and prayer team at Gateway Church. Since we are all exercising precautions in order to stay healthy and safe, the church found some really creative ways to stay connected to the community.
Can you explain in detail what the program entails?
In a nutshell, you complete a form that was created by the church to sign up volunteers to serve in an area of your choice. I chose to connect with someone through text and phone calls just to make sure they are okay.
How many others are involved and what’s the name of the church?
There are thousands of people involved whether you are on the requester side or the volunteer side.
What do you anticipate your role will be in this situation?
Currently, I am signed up to speak with a person our leaders feel I am best connected to. There’s also opportunities, for those who are allowed under local guidelines, to run errands like grocery shopping, picking up medications, and other items for those in need.
Can others get involved, if so, how?
Yes. You can apply to volunteer on the church’s website. And you don’t have to be a member of the church to volunteer, which is the best part.
Why do you think this is an important effort?
It is important because we are all human. We all are in need of something and ultimately, we need one another. No matter where you come from, what you look like, or what you believe, we should serve others.
Any words of encouragement to anyone reading this?
Let’s take care of ourselves and each other.
